Redcar Seafront
Red carpet treatment for Redcar
Redcar is a coastal town in the north-east of England, situated on a small exposed headland dominated by a unique local geographic feature, the Redcar Rocks. Redcar’s seafront promenade is somewhat tired and run-down, disconnected and from the inland High Street, and separated from the ocean by an extensive new sea wall. The brief demanded creative proposals to rejuvenate a 1.5 kilometre stretch of this seafront by improving the public realm, encouraging vibrancy at the water’s edge, and reconnecting the beach to the heart of the town.
Working to a very limited budget, FLACQ’s proposal transforms the promenade into a landscaped environment evoking the natural colour and forms of the Redcar rocks, creating a dynamic and playful seafront that reflects the geological and industrial heritage of Redcar. Using robust, natural materials, street furniture and shelter from the elements are integrated into the landscape. The focal point of the solution is a new visitor attraction providing indoor and outdoor dining with panoramic views and direct access to the beach. The proposal is intended to act as a catalyst to encourage future regeneration and help reinvent Redcar as a destination.
